Hi Rede Sisters,
We're excited to be back with our second newsletter! Today, we're diving deep into a topic many of us are navigating—perimenopause + menopause treatments. At Rede, we believe in empowering you with the knowledge and tools to thrive during this phase of life. That's why we're excited to share some brands and resources we trust (and some we use ourselves) and treatments that have shown real benefits for women like us.
Understanding Perimenopause & Menopause
Perimenopause + Menopause can bring a variety of symptoms (lucky us)—some subtle, others more disruptive. Here are a few of the most common (we know there are so many more):
-
Hot Flashes and Night Sweats: Sudden waves of heat or perspiration, often at inconvenient times(🥵).
-
Mood Swings and Anxiety: Emotional ups and downs might feel like they come out of nowhere (🥴).
-
Sleep Disturbances: Difficulty falling or staying asleep, along with night sweats, can leave you feeling drained during the day (😫).
-
Irregular Periods: Your menstrual cycle may change, with periods that are heavier or lighter or sometimes missed altogether (I suddenly skipped a month).
-
Brain Fog: Trouble focusing or remembering things, often called "brain fog," can be frustrating (I lost words mid sentence).
-
Weight Gain and Fatigue: Changes in metabolism and energy levels can make maintaining your usual routines a challenge (who am I).
-
Vaginal Dryness and Libido Changes: Shifts in hormone levels may lead to decreased libido or discomfort during sex (😳).
These symptoms and others can be challenging, but there are a range of treatments available to help you navigate this phase with confidence. Let's talk about some of the options.
Exploring Treatment Options: What You Need to Know
When it comes to managing perimenopausal + menopausal symptoms, finding the right treatment for YOU can make a world of difference. Here are some key things to think about as you explore medical options:
Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)
Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is one of the most common treatments used to manage symptoms during both perimenopause and menopause. It involves replacing hormones — particularly estrogen and progesterone — that naturally decline during this transition.
Things to consider:
-
Types of HRT: HRT can come in different forms, such as pills, patches, gels, or creams. Some are systemic (affecting the whole body), while others are localized (for symptoms like vaginal dryness).
-
Risks and Benefits: While HRT can alleviate symptoms like hot flashes and improve bone health, it's not without risks. For some women, HRT may increase the risk of blood clots, stroke, or certain cancers, especially with long-term use. Discuss these risks and benefits with your healthcare provider to find the balance for your unique needs!
-
Timing: Starting HRT close to the onset of perimenopause can provide the most benefits, but it's essential to work closely with a provider to monitor its effects and what is right for your body!
Bioidentical Hormones
Bioidentical hormones (I'm currently using these + loving them) are chemically identical to the hormones your body produces. They can be made from plant sources and are often marketed as a "natural" alternative to traditional HRT.
Things to consider:
-
Compounded vs. FDA-Approved: Bioidentical hormones are available in two forms—custom-compounded formulations (tailored to your individual needs by a pharmacy) and FDA-approved options. Be cautious with custom-compounded hormones, as they are not always regulated and can vary in quality.
-
Personalized Approach: Some women prefer bioidentical hormones because they feel it's a more "natural"solution, but it's important to remember that both bioidentical and traditional HRT carry similar risks and benefits. Speak with a provider who specializes in bioidentical hormone therapy to assess whether this is the right choice for you.
Non-Hormonal Treatments
Not all perimenopausal + menopausal women are candidates for hormone therapy, and some may prefer non-hormonal options.
Things to consider:
-
Medications: Non-hormonal medications like antidepressants or anti-seizure drugs have been found to help with hot flashes and mood swings in some women.
-
Lifestyle Changes: Diet, exercise, and stress management play a significant role in managing symptoms (This is HUGE for me. Staying on track with my exercise is critical). Reducing caffeine and alcohol intake, staying active, and practicing relaxation techniques like yoga or meditation can help improve sleep and mood.
-
Supplements: Some women take supplements like black cohosh, evening primrose oil, or soy isoflavones. While some studies suggest these may help with mild symptoms, more research is needed, and it's best to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new supplement.
